Project

Final project description

  • The project will be done in small groups of 3-4 students.
  • The idea is to investigate theoretical properties we study in class through Monte Carlo simulations
  • Clearly formulate the problem of interest; clearly describe the statistical framework; discuss the results
  • Prepare a presentation to be presented in class (last week of the semester)

Groups to be formed by 10/17. If you are strongly encouraged to email our TA, Salil Koner (skoner@) with your group preference, with a cc to all group members. After this deadline we will pair you with other peers in the class.

Project proposal (one page) due 10/29. Feedback will be provided to make sure the group is on the right track

  • The one-page proposal should list your team members and spell out briefly the main goals of the study, your basic approach, and the role of each team member
  • IMPORTANT: Pick a topic that interests you, but not something that you have already done!
  • This project need not be computationally expensive nor require a huge time investment in data collection, but it does need to show careful planning, good logic and the analysis concepts discussed in the course
  • If you are having trouble identifying a topic, please see the instructor as soon as possible

Submission protocol: Your report should be saved as pdf and emailed to both our TA, Salil Koner, (skoner@) and me (astaicu@) using email title ST793 GroupX. All group members should be cc-ed.

Project report due 12/06

  • The final product of the project will be the in-class presentation (7-10 slides; about 10 min) and the project report (3-5 pages). The report should include:
    • Motivation for studying this problem
    • A description of setting and/or methods to be used
    • Discussion of the major findings
    • A statement of the implications of your study
    • A discussion of further questions raised by your study

Submission protocol: Your report should be saved as pdf and emailed at the address astaicu@ using email title ST793 GroupX. All group members should be cc-ed.
